The 50 State Nicknames

Browsing through Behance, I came across this awesome lettering project by C. Lee. For the project, Lee created typographic emblems of the various nicknames for each of the 50 states. Check out the collection below (in alphabetical order by state), and scroll to the bottom to see which nickname belongs to which state!

50 and 50 – The State Mottos

I live in the state of Virginia, and I’ve always thought that our state motto was “Virginia is for Lovers”— I guess that’s the motto for bumper stickers, and to attract tourism to the state…come to find out the real motto is “Sic Semper Tyrannis”, Latin for ” Thus Always To Tyrants”…who knew? I guess we never think about our state mottos—come to think of it, do you know yours?

This morning I came upon this awesome project (via twitter), titled 50 and 50 – The State Mottos, where 50 individual designers were invited to represent their home state by illustrating its state motto. The project is headed by Young Jerks – the Studio of Dan Cassaro, who designed the illustration for his home state, New York. Below are just a few of the illustrations, take a look at the full gallery of work to find your state and check out the rest of the awesome designs.

Arkansas – Zach Graham

Mississippi – Will Bryant

New Hampshire – Jarrod Barretto

Tennessee – Matt Lehman

Michigan – Friends of Type

Kentucky – Nate Utesch
